Isbat wins the inaugural Inter University Cyber Competition

Isbat University has emerged winner of the inaugural Inter University Cyber Competition dubbed “Cyber Stars Competition” organized by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).

The competition was launched on July 1, 2022, in which over 250 students from 11 Universities participated.

However, only 52 students from 9 universities made it to the finals. The Universities that reached the finals include; Isbat University (overall winner), Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU), Uganda Christian University (UCU), Bishop Stuart University (BSU), Kampala International University (KIU), Bugema University, Busitema University, and St Lawrence University.

The best 6 students of the competition were produced by only two Universities; ISBAT University and St Lawrence University.

Each of the best 6 students won a professional training in cyber security worth USD600, and a mifi.

The competition aimed to provide a virtual space for students to learn more about cyber security and develop their skills in different domains such as vulnerability assessment, penetration testing digital forensics and computer network defense; increase awareness about cyber security among others.

The Competition also intended to; promote the building of a culture of cyber awareness amongst Ugandans, support the reduction of the human capacity gap in the cyber security field, and enhance national expertise in cyber security operations.

Speaking at the Competition’s Grand Finale, the UCC Acting Executive Director, Irene Kagwa Ssewankambo said that as Ugandans continue to embrace economic opportunities in the cyberspace and become increasingly reliant on the internet for trade and business, in the eyes of malicious cyber actors, this increasing connectivity and adoption of digital services increases the available attack surface and potential accessibility of Ugandan information infrastructures and networks.
