StanChart Uganda appoints Sanjay Rughani CEO, Kasekende replaces him as CEO StanChart Tanzania, and Sonny Zulu is appointed new Zambia CEO

Sanjay Rughani new CEO Standard Chartered Bank, Uganda

Sanjay Rughani, a banker with over 25 years of banking experience across the African continent, has been appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank, Uganda

He replaces Albert Saltson, who has retired from Standard Chartered Bank after more than 15 years. His final day at the bank was on 23rd March 2022. He came to Uganda, Mid 2017.  

Saltson, leaves Standard Chartered bank as Uganda’s 3rd largest bank by deposits (UGX2.474 trillion; 8.8% market share) as well as the 4th largest by assets (UGX3.740 trillion; 9% market share) and 4th most profitable (UGX94.3 billion; 8.8% market share). It is also the 6th largest lender (UGX1.222 trillion; 7.1% market share).

Sanjay, who has spent slightly over 22 years within the Standard Chartered Bank family, has been the Standard Chartered Bank, Tanzania’s CEO since January 2016.

In Tanzania, he has also been the Chair of the CEO Roundtable of Tanzania since June 2018 as well as the Deputy Chair of the Tanzania Bankers Association and Member of the Governing Council of the Tanzania Institute of Bankers amongst other roles.

The University of Mumbai (B. Com, Accountancy & Commerce) and Newport University (MBA Finance) graduate, before being appointed CEO in Tanzania, he held various roles within the Group, in India, Kenya, West Africa and Tanzania. The most prominent roles were Head of Finance & Change Management for Africa; Executive Director Finance & Area CFO for West Africa as well as the Regional Finance Manager, Africa.

He is a proactive, participative, strategically focused leader who utilizes keen analysis and insights and team approach to drive organizational improvements and implementation of best practices as well as a leader with superior interpersonal skills, capable of resolving multiple and complex issues and motivating staff to peak personal and organizational performance.

Sanjay’s announcement is pending a Bank of Uganda approval.

In Tanzania, Sanjay will be replaced by Herman Kasekende, who has been the Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank, Zambia. Herman, a Ugandan, has been the head of the Zambia StanChart unit since March 2017. Before that, Herman, another Standard Chartered veteran that spent 24 years with the bank, headed the Standard Chartered Ugandan unit between August 2012 and February 2017.

In Zambia, Herman has also been the Chairperson of the Bankers Association of Zambia.

Herman is being replaced by Sonny Zulu, a Zambian who, until his elevation to the Country CEO, has been the Managing Director, Consumer, Private and Business Banking at UAE Standard Chartered Bank since January 2019.

Sonny, who has been with the bank for slightly over 18 years, started as a Graduate Associate at the bank in 2003, rising through the ranks to become Head, of Retail Banking for Zambia and Southern Africa in September 2014, for nearly four years, after which he moved to the Middle East as the Regional Head, Strategic Transformation, Alliances & Performance Management for Africa & Middle East. It is from here that he became Managing Director, Consumer, Private and Business Banking at UAE Standard Chartered Bank.  

Sonny Zulu

Sonny holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mineral Sciences (Metallurgy) from the University of Zambia and an MBA, in Finance from the University of Manchester.
